Philander Smith College's 12th President

KIMBROUGH
Dr. Walter Kimbrough, 37, is the 12th president of Philander Smith College. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Degree with a biology major from the
University o f Georgia. He continued his education at Miami University in Oxford, C hio, completing a Master of Science Degree in College Student Personnel Services,
and he earned the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Higher Education from Georgia State University. Dr. Walter M . Kimbrough served as the Vice President for Student
Affairs at Albany State University in Albany, Georgia. He was the youngest Chief Stu lent Affairs Officer in the University System of Georgia, and one of the youngest
nation-wide. Prior to Albany State, he served at Old Dominion University, Georgia State University and Emory University.
Dr. Kimbrough has maintained active memberships in several higher education orgar izations, including the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators
(NASPA), Association of Fraternity Advisors (AFA) and the Southern Association fot College Student Affairs. He has served as an associate editor for the College Student
Affairs Journal, a 2001 Senior Scholar for AFA, and is presently a member of the N A >PA Academy Advisory Board.
Based on a strong fraternity experience, Dr. Kimbrough has forged a national reputat on as an expert on historically Black fraternities and sororities. He has conducted
interviews with national publications including Associated Press, the Washington Po$ t, the New York Times, and Rolling Stone Magazine. He has also been a guest on the
National Public Radio show, "Talk of the Nation." Dr. Kimbrough has given over 3 0 ) presentations on Black Greek life at numerous campuses and conferences. He is
the author of the book, "Black Greek 101: The Culture, Customs, and Challenges of Black Fraternities and Sororities." After five months, the book became an Essence
Magazine Top 10 Best Seller for non-fiction in paperback. The book is now in its fift I printing.
Dr. Kimbrough was named the 1994 New Professional of the Year for the Associatioj of Fraternity Advisors, and the 1998 National Association of Student Personnel
Administrators Dissertation of the Year award runner-up. He was selected as a 2001 I <Jissan-ETS H B C U Fellow, and a 2002 participant in the Millennium Leadership
Initiative sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.
Dr. Kimbrough is married to Adria Nobles Kimbrough, Chief Legal Counsel at Albai iy State University. He is the son of Rev. Walter L. Kimbrough, pastor of Cascade
United Methodist Church in Atlanta, and Marjorie L. Kimbrough, author and lectur :r. He has one brother, Wayne.

offering both Bachelor o f Arts and Bachelor o f Science Degrees. PSC
was
ed i n 1877 and is affiliated w i t h the United Methodist C h u r c h . It is
accredited by N o r t h Central Association o f Colleges and Schools, National
Council for the Accreditation o f Teacher Education, and the Board o f Higher
Education o f the United Methodist C h u r c h . T h e College operates under the
Board o f Trustees and is a member institution o f the United Negro College
Fund.
T h e College maintains an academic environment that fosters a love o f
