Dear Community of Scholars:
The Convocation Ceremony is one that provides an opportunity for the Philander Smith College Campus Community to
reflect upon our journey together and to prepare ourselves for the new academic year. This cherished tradition is an official
start to our new beginning, and it marks the point where we move forward with great expectations for all that we set out to
accomplish in this new season.
The faculty, staff, and administration pledge today to be committed to our students' success through nurturing, support,
guidance and counsel. In turn, we hope that you, the students, will commit to your own success by pledging to operate at your
highest capacity. We also hope and pray that each student will embody the ideals of a Philander Man and a Philander Woman,
who are fortified with good character, strong work ethic, high morals, scholastic excellence, and a strong spiritual commitment
As we rejoice in this day, we pledge to move not only Philander forward, but to also move forward on our individual promise.
Beginning from the point of this Convocation Ceremony, we will collectively advance ourselves, as well as this institution, into
heightened levels of excellence. As a community of scholars, we will push ourselves from beyond our comfort zones, challenge
ourselves to abhor mediocrity and to settle only for excellence.
Philander Smith College is an institution with a rich heritage that was founded on the belief that every man and woman,
regardless of his or her racial, social, or economic background, should have access to an education. We are all privileged to
be here. For some, it is their life's mission to be here and, for others, it is their divine destiny. No matter the circumstances in
which you find yourself at this place and at this appointed time, Philander Smith College is the bridge that can take you into
the future of your design.
Our big dreams cannot be achieved if we are content to sleep. So, may the clarion call to Move Philander Forward be our
awakened footsteps, buttressed by vigor and determination, which are leading us to dreams fulfilled.
Sincerely yours,
Roderick L. Smothers, Sr., Ph.D.
President
Philander Smith College

LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING"
ARR. BY JAMES W E L D O N JOHNSON AND JOHN ROSAMOND JOHNSON
Lift every voice and sing
T i l l earth and heaven ring,
Ring w i t h the harmonies o f Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
H i g h as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us,
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun
Let us march on till victory is w o n .
Stony the road we t r o d ,
Bitter the chastening r o d ,
Felt i n the days when hope u n b o r n had died;
Yet w i t h a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that w i t h tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out f r o m the gloomy past,
T i l l now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
T h o u who has brought us thus far on the way;
T h o u who has by Thy might Led us into the light,
Keep us forever i n the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray f r o m the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk w i t h the wine of the w o r l d , we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
May we forever stand.
True to our God,
True to our native land.

FACULTY AND STAFF PLEDGE
PHILANDER FORWARD
LEADER:
As members of the faculty and staff of Philander Smith College, we realize that we
have been given an awesome responsibility.
PEOPLE:
We understand this responsibility, to guide these young men and women as
they begin to realize their full potential. We freely accept this task, and will do
it with a sense of purpose and passion.
LEADER:
As the elders of this community, we are here to provide guidance and counsel, to
mentor and advise.
PEOPLE:
We will set high expectations for our students, and will be willing to
celebrate their successes, comfort their disappointments, and lovingly
correct their mistakes.

We must be role models as well, and must never forget that they watch our very
