President Dr. Trudie Kibbe Reed recently announced that Philander Smith
College was awarded a $391,964 Supplemental Arts Grant from the Donald W
Reynolds Foundation to purchase an art collection to display i n the new library.
" I am confident that this art collection will aesthetically enhance the new library's
environment while providing a sense of the full scope of the African American
experience," said Reed. "Philander Smith College will have an unique art collection
to expand the educational and cultural experience of our students."
More than 25 nationally and regionally known artists, whose work
includes paintings, photography and mixed media, will be included. The collection
will enrich our students, staff, faculty and the surrounding community. "We hope
to honor the lives of past generations. We hope to educate existing students. A n d
we hope to inspire children of the next generation," said Reed.

(at right) Eight PSC students were inducted into the Pi Sigma Kappa Chapter of the
Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society in a candlelight ceremony during the Fall Honors

national scholastic honor society in all fields. The Phi Sigma Kappa Chapter, Alpha Kappa Mu
was established at Philander Smith College during the (1939-1940)

Congo) is renowned for his story telling ability. Members of the PSC faculty and staff recently
met with Bishop Ntambo to forge a relationship with the United Methodist Church in the
Congo as a way of recruiting students to be a part of the outreach component of the Harry R.
Kendall Science Health Mission Center. For many years there has been extreme unrest in the
Congo and young persons have not been able to receive a quality education. Bishop

�The Harry R. Kendall Science Health and Mission Center continues to take shape on the
PSC campus. The Center w i l l provide much needed laboratory and lecture space for the Natural
and Physical Science Division while at the same time providing a link to the community through
