Philander Smith College is a small, privately supported, historically Black, four-year liberal
arts institution related to The United Methodist Church. The College offers four degrees:
the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Science, the Bachelor of Business Administration,
and the Bachelor of Social Work.
The College’s mission is to graduate academically accomplished students, grounded as
advocates for social justice, determined to change the world for the better.
Philander Smith College, the only United Negro College Fund member institution in
Arkansas, strives to provide a quality education for all, regardless of race, religion, sex,
national origin or ethnic background.

Background

Founded in 1877, Philander Smith College is the result of the first attempt west of the
Mississippi River to make education available to Freedmen (former African American
slaves). The forerunner of the College was Walden Seminary, named in honor of Dr. J.M.
Walden, one of the originators and the first Corresponding Secretary of the Freedmen’s
Aid Society.
In 1882, while soliciting funds, Dr. G.W. Gray met Mrs. Adeline Smith, widow of Mr.
Philander Smith of Oak Park, Illinois. The late Philander Smith had been a liberal donor
to Asiatic Missions and had developed an interest in the work of the Methodist ChurchSouth. In making her gift to Dr. Gray, Mrs. Smith designated $10,500 for Walden Seminary.
The trustees accepted the gift and gave it special recognition by changing the name of the
struggling Walden Seminary to Philander Smith College. A new site for the school had
already been purchased at Eleventh and Izard Streets, Little Rock, Arkansas. The gift made by
Mrs. Smith was a significant contribution towards the construction of Budlong Hall, the first
brick building on the new site.

students. With your financial support, Philander Smith
College can administer scholarships to deserving youth. A top
level sponsorship package will create internships, mentoring,
enrichment programs, enhanced curriculum as well as other
much needed resources for our young people. When you

Message from the President
Dear alumni and friends:
As the 14th President of Philander Smith College, I am blessed and honored to
welcome you to the Inaugural Sponsorship Gala. Not only do I warmly greet you,
but I also extend my sincere and deep appreciation for your support.
Your presence this evening demonstrates your commitment to helping open up
educational avenues for our students. While we expect to experience wonderful
entertainment and fellowship tonight, this Scholarship Gala is a smart investment
for the future. The scholarship dollars will be used to help ensure that Philander
Smith College graduates the next generation of change agents, professionals and
leaders who are equipped to strengthen our city, state, nation and the world.
Please join me in paying tribute to tonight’s recipients who will benefit from the
Philander Smith College Presidential Scholars, Mason Scholars, Donaldson
Scholars Academy Scholarship, Murphy Scholars, Britt Skarda Religious Life
Scholarship, the S.T.A.R.T Scholars and the Ozell Sutton Endowed Scholarship.
Your act of sowing seeds of faith and hope will see to it that these scholars are
poised to harvest their greatness which will one day benefit us all.
I would also be remiss if I did not acknowledge the hard work of the Inaugural
Steering Committee, Chairman Charles Donaldson, and Honorary Chairmen
Bishop Gary Mueller and Bishop Felton May, Bishop Kenneth Hicks and all who
served on the Scholarship Gala committee. I am thankful to all of you who served
to make this seminal occasion so memorable and worthwhile.
I am eternally grateful for the benevolence and generosity of our sponsors, guests,
and all those who have contributed to the success of the Inaugural Scholarship Gala.
Your spirit of cooperation and unity in coming together for this purpose truly proves
that we are on the right track moving Philander Smith College forward.
