At Philander Smith College, o u r a i m is to move this great institution to new

The Philander Smith College S.T.A.R.T. S u m m e r Bridge Program is a unique
opportunity for newly admitted students to get a strong start on their college
career, experience campus life and explore the City of Little Rock, Arkansas.
During an intensive five week program, students w i l l enroll in up to six credit
hours of coursework. Program participants w i l l be paired with current student
scholars, mentors and academic advisors who w i l l help t h e m navigate through
academic, self-improvement and leadership workshops.

STUDENT TUITION ASSISTANCE
AND READINESS TRACKS/PATHWAYS
The Philander Smith College S.T.A.R.T. S u m m e r Bridge Program is a five week
academic e n r i c h m e n t and Leadership development program. It provides a seamtess
transitional opportunity for f i r s t - t i m e f r e s h m e n to get an early and strong start on
their college career by staying on campus, and completing up to six (6) credits during
five (5) weeks in the s u m m e r . This intense and exciting s u m m e r experience offers
students the opportunity to prepare f o r t h e academic, personal, and social challenges
that they may encounter white in college. Students are provided with a structured
environment

conducive

to building

the f u n d a m e n t a l

skills

and relationships

necessary for successful completion of a bachelor's degree. In addition to tutoring,

program provides extensive academic and personal counseling to equip and support

Program Scholars are awarded a s u m m e r - o n l y scholarship that covers tuition,
housing, and a m e a l plan. The Philander Smith College S.T.A.R.T S u m m e r Bridge
Program is c o m m i t t e d to the development of the entire student.

ROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Before the fall semester, students are offered the opportunity to adjust to the
demands of college, both in and out of the classroom. Once students are assigned
m e n t o r s and are aligned with the appropriate Track/Pathway (Urban, Ambassador,
C o m m u n i t y or Christian), they w i l l :
•

Enroll in six hours of coursework;

•

Attend study/discussion groups with s u p p l e m e n t a l instructors and tutors;

•

Participate in social, cultural, professional and spiritual activities;

•

Reside in o n - c a m p u s housing for the entire s u m m e r t e r m ;

•

Attend academic, self-improvement, and leadership w o r k s h o p / s e m i n a r s ;

•

Meet with counselors for academic advising, course scheduling, and assistance
with career goal development.

ELIGIBILITY
s t u d e n t s considered for participation in the Philander Smith College S.T.A.R.T.
S u m m e r Bridge P r o g r a m m u s t meet the following requirements:
•

Be a m e m b e r of an under-represented minority group;

•

Be admitted to Philander Smith College;

•

Be available to attend the program for the entire five-week s u m m e r session;

•

Plan to continue e n r o l l m e n t and graduate f r o m Philander Smith College;

•

Have a cumulative high school CPA of 2.5 or better.

Summer Bridge
PROGRAM

THE 4-TRACK/PATHWAY SYSTEM
Using a success track/pathway model, eligible students are aligned with one of the
following scholastic tracks:
TRACK/PATHWAY 1: Urban S c h o l a r s
This track/pathway is designed for students who have an interest in pursuing majors
in fields that are linked to providing innovative solutions to the challenges of urban
issues such as poverty and c r i m e . As part of their matriculation, these students
w i l l be required to volunteer a designated n u m b e r of hours working and interacting
with professionals in t h e i r c h o s e n disciplines. [ M i n i m u m grade point average is 2.5).
TRACK/PATHWAY 2: A m b a s s a d o r S c h o l a r s
This track/pathway is designed for those students who, while in high school,
demonstrated strong leadership and communication skills, and are capable of

w o r k i n g independently and with team m e m b e r s . Eligibility for this track requires

three (3) letters of recommendation, preferably f r o m the school counselor, a teacher

and the pastor of the church that the student attends. These students w i l l voluntarily
represent, positively promote, and uphold the mission of Philander Smith CoLLege
by serving as student representatives during a variety of coltege-hosted programs,
events and activities. ( M i n i m u m grade point average is 3.0).
TRACK/PATHWAY 3: Community S c h o l a r s
This track/pathway is designed for those students w h o exhibit a high level of
a l t r u i s m , empathy and concern f o r o t h e r s , particularly the elderly, infirmed, indigent
and neglected. These students w i l l volunteer with help agencies and ministries
throughout the Little Pock C o m m u n i t y to provide assistance to persons in need.
( M i n i m u m grade point average is 2.5).
TRACK/PATHWAY A: Christian S c h o l a r s
This track/pathway is designed for those students who have been diligent in performing
church-retated duties. They must be interested in sharing the tenets of their faith with
others through committed work with the Philander Smith College campus religious
life and ministries. These students must be of good moral character, devoted to service
and willing to devote time to helping others through peer counseting, rap sessions, etc.
(Minimum grade point average is 2.5).
