Wiley Gives $500,000 To PSC
1938 Graduate Says "Pennies Make Dollars "

A penny pincher and 1938 graduate of
Philander Smith College gave a chunk of her
life's savings to her alma mater Wednesday,
the largest donation by an individual in the
school's history.
Esther Birch Wiley, a Los Angeles public
school counselor who's more than 80 years
old, gave the college the proceeds of her
frugal living and of choosing the right savings
accounts—a personal check for $500,000.
"It's been a great life," she told college
trustees, administrators and family members.
Cameras flashed as Wiley, the granddaughter
of a sharecropper, gave a large version of the
check to a beaming college President Trudie
Kibbe Reed.
The donation had been accumulating
interest in several Los Angeles banks
for decades and will be used to
help build a new library at the
123-year-old historically black
college, which has about 950
students. Wiley attended the
school when blacks had few
options for higher education.
"Benjamin Lranklin said a penny
saved is a penny gained," Wiley told the
100 or so gathered in the Myer Titus Academic
Building on Wednesday. " I got out of the car
the other day and saw a penny, so I stooped
down to pick it up. Pennies make dollars, you
know."
Philander Smith means a lot to Wiley, who

gave me a lot of what I needed to believe in
myself and believe in people."
Wiley considers its students her heirs and
has planned this gift for years.
" I intended to have 12 children," she said.
"But I've had two husbands and no
success. So these are my children."
The gift honors the Birch
family, including Wiley's
siblings.
"This gift will better prepare
our students for a global and
technological society and to meet the
challenges and opportunities that are
awaiting them," Reed said.
Wiley, who taught in Little Rock for 12
years after her college graduation, is still
counseling, despite being more than 80 years
old. She doesn't reveal her exact age. She
hasn't missed a day of work since 1960, and

rearranged her holiday schedule so her trip
to Philander Smith wouldn't blemish her
record.
Wiley's work and saving ethic is about as
old as she is. Her grandfather gave her a $25
gift when she was a little girl growing up in the
Central High School neighborhood. Instead of
spending it, Wiley saved it, and added to it the
5-cents weekly allowance that she and her seven
brothers and sisters received.
Within years, thanks to mortgage investments
and savings accounts with 6 percent interest
rates, those pennies and dimes and teacher's
paychecks became a substantial amount of
money.
And rather than spending it on trips or luxuries,
Wiley kept on saving, until she had the amount
she wanted to give to Philander Smith.
"I'd lay in bed thinking, gee, my money's
growing," she said.
Lt Gov. Winthrop P. Rockefeller gives Ms. Wiley
the Arkansas Traveler Award.
Members of the press, faculty and staff gather to listen to Ms. Wiley speak.

Alumni And Students Make Annual Phonathon A Success
The third annual "Giving Back" Phonathon was held November
1 -November 11. The effort involved current PSC students calling
alumni to request financial support for the College. Approximately
3,000 alumni were called and a total of $50,000 was pledged.
A total of 15 students volunteered their time over the two-week
calling period. They made the calls from the M.L. Harris Fine
Arts Building on the PSC Campus.
Contributions from the phonathon will be used to help make
up the shortfall between what it costs to educate students and
what is paid in tuition. The students were competing for
scholarships awarded based on the amount of pledges they
obtained.
Scholarship winners were Nehemiah Suggs, first place;
Regenia Statewright, second place; and Anushka Sookdeo, third
place."Special thanks to alumni who pledged their support to the
College and who have already sent in donations," said Delia
Moore, College Relations Co-Director.

giving back to their communities," said
Dr. Thomas.
