FROM T H E P R E S I D E N T
We are off to a great academic year,
with 950 students enrolled this fall.
This represents a 3% increase over last
year. Our surge in students is due in
part to the tremendous recruitment
efforts by alumni across the country.
We thank you for your active
involvement in promoting the College.
You are to be commended for your

continuous support and love of your
Alma Mater. Alumni support enables many students to
realize their dreams and full potential. We salute you for
giving hope to so many learners who would not otherwise
have access to higher education. Our students are working
very hard to continue your legacy of stewardship, academic
excellence, and pride in their College.
Additionally, the support that you pledged during the
recent phonathon was outstanding. Our students enjoyed
talking to you over the phone and were proud of the
overwhelming affirmative responses that were received.
Contributions from the phonathon will be matched by The
College Fund/UNCF and utilized to address critical needs
on our campus.
One of our greatest challenges and needs is a new library
and technology center. We are in the silent phase of a capital
campaign to raise $6.6 million to build a "state of the art"
library and technology center. This library and increased
resources are essential to continued accreditation. We also
have been improving the living quarters of our students and

For over a century, Philander
Smith College has cherished a
vision that is both broad and
challenging.
Our Alma Mater has embraced a
mission to provide access to higher
education for individuals who are,
or have the potential to be,
academically talented regardless of

educational background.
This access is available to all, regardless of race, religion,
sex, national origin, or ethnic backgound. The College needs
adequate financial resources to carry out this mission.
As alumni, we owe so much to Philander Smith College.
She definitely equipped each of us to compete in the larger
society and still fosters a caring, nurturing environment.
We must be willing to make financial contributions that
will help to assure the fulfillment of the College's mission.
During the 1999 National Alumni Convention held in
Kansas City, MO, the Alumni Association voted to fully
support all fundraising campaigns conducted by the College.
The Association will no longer plan and execute fundraisers
independent of the College. Alumni are strongly encouraged
to support all Institutional Advancement efforts.
The new year is upon us! Please make a personal
commitment to do something tangible for "Dear Ole PSC."

P S C LAUNCHES PLANNED GIVING PROGRAM
As the calendar year draws to a close, many "new firsts"
will be embarked upon. A new millennium, a new century,
a new decade, a new year. Many students w i l l be
experiencing the beginning of the rest of their lives as they
enroll for the PSC experience...an experience that will
change and impact their lives eternally, as well as socially
and intellectually.
What better time than now for P S C alumni to join a
program that will contribute to the long-term viability of
the College: A Planned and Deferred Giving Program. This
new program was introduced in July at the National Alumni
Convention in Kansas City, Missouri.
Through a Planned and Deferred Giving Program, alumni
and friends of Philander Smith College can remember "Dear
'Ole PSC" in an estate plan. This could be done through a
bequest in a Will, gift annuity, or special charitable trust.
Gift annuities and charitable trusts can be set up to benefit
one now by reducing current income tax, avoiding capital
gains tax, and reducing or even eliminating estate tax.
At the same time, this will provide one with an income
for life, with the College being the beneficiary.
Planned and Deferred Giving Programs have been in use
for a number of years and used successfully at many colleges
and universities throughout the nation. Many at the National
Alumni Convention heard about this exciting new program
and have already expressed interest and taken action.
I f you would like more information about how you and
the College can both benefit from this kind of planning,
please complete the form below and return it to Dr. Stephen
Schafer, Director of Institutional Advancement, Philander
Smith College, 812 W. 13 th Street, Little Rock, A R 72202,

renovating the auditorium in the M.L. Harris Fine
Arts Building.
Within our new Strategic Plan, we are enhancing
academic excellence by infusing technology with
classroom learning, internationalizing the
curriculum, increasing faculty development,
emphasizing civic leadership, and focusing on
religious life.
There are also other new developments that I look
forward to sharing with you during the National
Alumni Convention in March 2000.
Thank you for your continuing support.

difference. Each of us should strive to do all that we
can for the College that did so much for us.
Alumni will receive information regarding election of officers from the Nominations Committee in
the very near future. Chapter and at-large members
should get 2000 dues in as soon as possible to participate in the election process.
Chapters are encouraged to reactivate and/or remain active. The Association needs each of you!
College classes are urged to plan reunions for the
National Convention in Little Rock, March 30-April
2, 2000.
Let's get together in the new century!
