The Los Angeles Alumni Chapter
hosted the convention, under the

REGISTER FOR 2004 NATIONAL ALUMNI CONVENTION
The Greater Little Rock Alumni Chapter will host the 2004
National Alumni Convention March 25-27. The host hotel is the
newly renovated Wyndham Riverfront in North Little Rock,
Arkansas.
Mrs. Yvonne C. Alexander is the Convention Chairperson, and
Dr. Kathryn F. Worthen, National Alumni Association President,
will preside.
Register for the Convention by using the registration form on
Page 7 of this issue. We encourage you to register early to take
advantage of lower hotel and convention rates.
Former athletes and Miss PSC Queens will be honored and
recognized during the 2004 convention. We encourage all alumni
who served on an athletic team, as a cheerleader, or who served
as Miss PSC while a student at Philander Smith College, to please
register for the Convention.
Also, if you are celebrating your 25th or 50th anniversary ('54
and '79 graduates), something special is in store for graduates
from these landmark years. It has become a tradition to present
50-year medallions to our Golden Alumni, and silver plaques to
our 25-year graduates in the anniversary year. We urge you to
register for the convention and allow us to present you with this
special recognition. We ask other golden alumni who have
received a medallion, to wear it during the Convention.
The "Alumni Reunion Choir" was a big hit during the 2002
and 2003 Conventions, and we anticipate a repeat performance
in 2004, under the direction of former PSC choir director, Dr.
Carl Harris.
There also will be much to see on the campus of Philander
Smith College, and we are looking forward to giving our alumni
a V I P grand tour of our newest buildings, including the Donald
W. Reynolds Library and Technology Center, the 67,000 squarefoot residential center (dormitory), and the Harry R. Kendall
Science and Health Mission Center.
Big plans are in store for you. Registration information is inside.
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Excitement abounds on the campus of
Philander Smith College.Energy is
spreading across the campus - the Spirit
of Philander is in the air!
We have all anticipated the opening of
the new Residential Life Center. The wait
is over, and students are now calling the
three-story, 67,000 square foot facility
their new home.
Blessings have come our way in the Dr. Trudie Kibbe Reed
form of two major financial gifts
designated for scholarships.
The Tom Joyner Foundation contributed $250,000 for
scholarships, to allow P S C to serve the needs of additional
deserving students. Tom Joyner, nationally syndicated radio talk
show host and philanthropist, presented this contribution during
his Southwest Airlines Sky Show, which was held at the Statehouse
Convention Center in Little Rock and broadcast nationally.
Also, Harold and Judy Tenenbaum of the Tenenbaum
Foundation presented a gift of $107,000 to support scholarships
for science students who will study in the new Harry R. Kendall
Science Health and Mission Center. This scholarship fund will
be endowed and added to a matched fund that will be raised on
February 20, 2004, at the opening ceremony for the Kendall
Center.
The Tenenbaums decided to make this contribution to Philander
Smith College, because of our concentration on improving health
conditions of African Americans and disenfranchised persons
around the world.
We are most appreciative for all of the great deeds shown by
the Tom Joyner Foundation, Tenenbaum Foundation, and other
donors who support the College and our students.

FROM THE NATIONAL ALUMNI
ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT
The forefathers of Philander Smith
College went to the gospel of John for the
motto of our Alma Mater: "You shall
know the truth and the truth shall make
you free." (John 8:32) During my recent
visit to PSC, I experienced the revitalized
campus, interacted with students and staff
and dined in the cafeteria. These
experiences confirmed beyond doubt that
God's truth still marches on at Philander
Smith. It is apparent that God is
showering our institution with blessings Dr. Kathryn F. Worthen
to ensure its journey into the future.
Alumni, your contributions are the cornerstone for our Alma
Mater. A great percentage of faculty and staff are alumni. We
hold eight seats on the Board of Trustees. During the past three
years, alumni have contributed over $1.7 million to the college.
We just keep marching on!
As this year comes to an end, I encourage you to do the following:
* Make plans to come home to PSC in March 2004 to see the
new campus, meet old friends and strategize for future programs.
Golden alumni, silver alumni, athletes, past Miss PSCs and the
class with the highest attendance will be honored. Dr. Carl Harris
will direct the alumni choir.
* Pay your national dues before January 31, 2003, so you can
support the programs of the national association and participate
in the election of new national officers.
* Send your annual financial contribution to PSC. The Bush
Grant dollar for dollar matching extends through January 2004.
When you read this message, my term as national president
will be in its final months. Serving in this position has been a
blessing. I extend heartfelt thanks to A L L who have supported
our Alma Mater and me. This includes special recognition and
kudos to the Los Angeles and Little Rock chapters for hosting
outstanding annual conventions. As we continue to move forward,
always remember: "We can do all things through God who
strengthens us."
combined with the Myer L . Titus Academic Center and Crawford
J . Mims Multi-purpose complex, as well as our historic Cox
Administration Building, make for a very attractive and inviting
campus. During the National Alumni Convention, you will have
an opportunity to tour these new facilities. We look forward to
giving our alumni a grand tour!

DR. JAMES H. CONE INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME
Dr. James H . Cone, a 1958 PSC graduate, was inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of
Fame, during an elegant ceremony in October. Dr. Cone has been called "a theologian, a
prophet, a champion of the poor, and a speaker of the painful truths of the African-American
experience." He is a native of Bearden, Arkansas and currently resides in New York City
where he is the Charles A. Briggs Distinguished Professor of Systematic Theology at Union
Theological Seminary. He is recognized as an international leader and authority on black
theology, lecturing at over 800 universities and organizations throughout the world. After
graduating from PSC, he obtained a bachelor's degree in divinity from Garrett Theological
Seminary, a master's degree and Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from Northwestern University.
In the aftermath of the 1967 riots in Detroit, Dr. Cone started writing his race critique beginning
with the book Black Theology and Black Power, which was followed by A Black Theology of
Liberation in 1970. In his career, Dr. Cone has authored 11 books and has contributed to
countless journals, magazines and anthologies.
Dr. James H . Cone
DR. JOHNNY M. MOORE APPOINTED VICE PRESIDENT
Dr. Johnny M . Moore, a 1989 PSC graduate, was recently appointed as Vice President of

PRINCIPAL CARMEL SHEPPARD RECEIVES ACCOLADES
Ms. Carmel Sheppard, a 1970 PSC graduate, was recently featured in Lincoln, Nebraska's
Journal Star newspaper. The article, titled "No Obstacle is Too Big," highlighted how she
instills her philosophy of success in her students as principal of Dawes Middle School in the
city. Ms. Sheppard, who is the only African-American principal in Lincoln Public Schools, is
a native of Little Rock, Arkansas where she attended Horace Mann High School. She received
a four-year scholarship to attend Philander Smith College where she earned a bachelor's
degree in biology. She returned to college, attending the University of Arkansas, to obtain
hours in the field of education, as well as Kansas State University, where she received a
master's degree in educational administration. She also has a master's degree in entomology.
Ms. Sheppard feels that she has found her niche at Dawes Middle School in Lincoln where
about a fourth of the enrollment are students of color, and half are low income. " I couldn't
imagine a day without my kids," she said.
