NATIONAL
PRESIDENT'S
MESSAGE

The Alumni Mentor Program was
supposed to be kicked off during the
Fall Semester. However, we encountered some problems i n getting the
names of the students. Names will be
distributed to Chapters and active general members by their respective cities.
Alumni are to provide moral and spiritual support to the students. The relationship should foster commitment to
our Alma Mater throughout the
student's adult life. If you live in a city
without a Chapter and would like to
participate or receive more information on the program, please contact me.
Furthermore, you can become a fullfledged member of the National
Alumni Association by sending $20.00
to Mrs. Hynes.

By Jearlene Miller, P S C N A A
President

Due to our financial support, we have
been able to give over $80,000 to our
Alma Mater from the Capital Campaign Fund. The funds have been applied toward improvements i n the
physical plant and the purchase of
vans. The appearance of the campus
must be continually maintained i n
order to appeal to prospective students
and donors. You may pledge and pay
any amount. Nice mementos are being
given to alumni who fulfill their
pledges in specific categories. Mr. Tom
Burl would like to hear from our " s i lent" alumni with regard to this campaign.

Greetings!
Progress is still being made at our
Alma Mater. I am pleased to report
that your time, talent and financial
support are making a difference, and
are appreciated. I participated in my
first Homecoming this year, and it was
great. Let's generate more enthusiasm
among other alumni to return home
each fall for this event
You should have received correspondence from Dr. Titus regarding the bus
he has ordered on behalf of the National Alumni Association. It should
be delivered in January, 1990. This is
our financial obligation, so we need to
raise approximately $50,000 by the
time of die 1990 Alumni Conference
(March 21-24). The Transportation
Fund needs our financial attention. We
promised President Titus we would
fulfill our obligation. Each alumnus is
asked to contribute only $100. If 500
alumni would pay $100, we would
have the funds we need to pay off this
debt. The indebtedness is in the name
of the College, so we want to remove
this burden as soon as possible. Will
you please send your check to Mrs.
Rose Hynes today?

Page 3
You may also send checks designated
for this fund to Mrs. Vault.
The tone of this message is MONEY.
The College's success in providing a
quality education and remaining a
player in this competitive environment depends on money and how well
the College manages its resources. We
have a responsibility to our youth to
ensure that they receive a good education, because they are the leaders of
tomorrow. As an institution of higher
education, Philander Smith has a responsibility to prepare students for a^
career by providing a quality education. As Alumni, let's view ourselves
as stockholders in Philander Smith,
investing our money, time, and effort
We will reap huge dividends in the
form of young graduates entering the
work force, armed with die proper
tools for success. If you can't support
all the programs, please support at
least one.
M A Y GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS
YOU!

she chose Philander because of the
