FROM T H E P R E S I D E N T
Greetings! On behalf of the trustees,
faculty, staff and students, I want to thank
you for supporting the capital campaign,
phonathon, UNCF, athletic fund drive,
and other fundraising initiatives that
address critical needs on our campus. We
appreciate your generosity and
unwavering support of your Alma Mater.
The spirit of giving has been steady in
the hearts of our alumni. Your
overwhelming support is evidenced by
the visible construction taking place on
Dr. Trudie Kibbe Reed
the new library and technology center at
the front of the campus. We also recently broke ground on the
new science and health mission center which will be built adjacent
to the new library.
When you return for the National Alumni Convention in March
2002, you will see that progress is taking place. This success would
not be possible without alumni who are committed and involved.
Your pledge of $600,000 toward our capital campaign goal is
vital to the success of the campaign. We thank those of you who
have made a pledge and/or contribution to this effort. We also
appreciate the National Alumni Association for its outstanding
support and leadership.
Alumni response to other initiatives taking place on campus is
also appreciated. We encourage your continued assistance with
student recruitment and appreciate your presence at musical
performances, athletic events, lectures, and other campus
activities.
We look forward to hosting you during the National Alumni
Convention in March and sharing exciting new developments that
are underway. Because of you, we continue to make progress.

campaign? I f you have made a Capital Campaign pledge, make
a payment. I f you have not pledged, do so immediately by using
information that was mailed.
She needs your presence. Come to Little Rock in March 2002

She needs your participation in alumni and campus activities.
Please give of your time, talent and treasures. Pay your alumni

vote in the upcoming national election of officers.
She needs your prayers for we can do all things through
God who strengthens us!
I take this opportunity to say thanks to local, national and

SUTTON AND M Y E R S INDUCTED INTO B L A C K HALL OF FAME
Two Philanderians were recently
inducted into the Ninth Annual
Arkansas Black Hall of Fame. Ozell
Sutton, Class of 1950 and Amina C.
Myers, Class of 1963, were honored
during a banquet at the Doubletree
in Little Rock.
The name Ozell Sutton has come
to be synonymous with integrity,
determination and trailblazing. His
greatest accomplishments have been
in the area of civil rights.
Dr. Sutton was a decoy for the
Dr. Ozell Sutton
Little Rock Nine, diverting the
vehement anger of the mob that gathered to keep nine black
children from entering Central High School. He also was with
Dr. Martin Luther King the day he was assassinated in Memphis.
His face is also among pictures of the crowds that marched in
Selma and Birmingham.
Dr. Sutton served in the United States Marine Corps, defending
the rights of Americans, black and white. It was the racial prejudice
that he experienced while serving in the military - and his return
to a society that denied him the rights for which he'd fought - that
set his determination to remove barriers for himself and other
blacks.
Currently, he is Southeast Regional Coordinator of Community
Service Relations for the U.S. Department of Justice in Atlanta
Georgia.

Amina Claudine Myers
is known for music whose
sound ranges from jazz to
blues to funk to R&B.
However, it is gospel that
is close to her heart.
Raised in the Conway
County
town
of
B l a c k w e l l , Myers has
been a musician since the
age of four. At seven, she
began formal piano
Amina Claudine Myers
training. Later, she served
as choir director and
pianist at her church and co-founded the Gospel Four and the
Royal Hearts musical groups.
Ms. Myers studied European concert music at Philander Smith
College and graduated with a degree in music education. She
subsequently taught in the Chicago public school system.
A fixture for many years on the international jazz circuit, Ms.
Myers has taken her musical talents to such destinations as New
York, Europe, Japan, Scandinavia, Ottawa and Montreal. She has
become a much-in-demand performer at blues and gospel festivals.
Her colleagues say Ms. Myers stands out as a notable exception
in a time when safe and sane commercialism is more the rule
than the exception. To that Ms. Myers says, " I just try to meditate
and let the Creator guide me. I ' m just a vehicle - a vessel - and I
hope I can make uplifting music that makes people feel good."
