FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Alumni,
Six months! This is the amount
of time it took you to raise as much
money for Philander Smith College
this year as you did A L L of last year.
What great news to share. I am glad
that you are helping us to meet our
needs in a significant way.
A major part of this push has been
your willingness to be a part o f the
1877 Society. E a c h year, we w i l l
recognize alumni that contribute at
least $1,877 to our annual fund.

Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough

These unrestricted dollars help
us to meet many needs, especially the funding of scholarships
for students. I have learned that Philander Smith College has
the highest percentage of Pell Grant eligible students o f any
four-year College in the State of Arkansas. We also have one
of the highest percentages for H B C U s nationally. So your
dollars help us to assist these students, as well as to fund our
major scholarships such as athletics and the choir.
M y goal is for our alumni to give $1 million a year in
unrestricted funds within four years. It is possible, as the
alumnae of our sister school, Bennett College, began doing
the same recently. Bennett is a smaller school with a smaller
alumni base, so I know we w i l l be able to do just as well. We
have a tremendous chance this year to break our record for
alumni annual fund giving, so please share the news with
your classmates.
We are preparing for an exciting year, and we want you
to be a part of the excitement. The inauguration festivities
took place September 22-25. I was personally delighted to
welcome Dr. Michael E r i c D y s o n as the first speaker for
the new "Bless The M i c " president's lecture series. A n d let
me add my thanks to Delia Anderson and the Inauguration
Committee — they did a W O N D E R F U L job — I received
many comments from visitors who were very impressed with
Philander Smith College.
You are truly a wonderful group of people. I w i l l continue
to work with you so that we can increase our capacity to
make things happen at Philander Smith College. Y o u have
responded to the call, and I encourage you to share the news
with all alumni: Philander Smith College has begun its
renaissance!
Sincerely,
Walter M . Kimbrough, Ph.D.

FROM THE NAA PRESIDENT
Dear Fellow A l u m n i and Friends,
President Kimbrough launched the 1877 Society early
this year in an effort to increase the level o f unrestricted
funds to the College from alumni, family and friends.
The National A l u m n i Association ( N A A ) at the 2005
Convention on July 14, 2005 set a goal to acquire 100 new
1877 Society members by December 3 1 , 2005.
To show unified support to the N A A ' s campaign, your
leaders, which include the elected National Officers (5),
appointed Regional Officers ( 4 ) , Chapter Presidents (12)
and Standing Committees Chairpersons, have all committed
to show the way on the Road to the G O L D . But, current
numbers don't add up to 100, so it's a given that we need
" Y O U " to make our G O A L .
We believe that Philanderians from the various
graduating classes joining the leadership team is the best
approach for making the 1877 Society a success. Please
know that you can make a $1,877 lump sum payment by
cash,.check or credit card. Y o u can also make installment
payments by the same methods all to be completed by
December 3 1 , 2005, to become a Founding Member of the
Society. Make sure to show your Class Year on the check in
the Memo Section and make it payable to Philander Smith
College.
I f you can't commit to joining the Founding Members
of the 1877 Society at this time, why not complete your
donation at the 2006 Convention on March 23,2006. Should
$1,877 not be possible for you, please give your "Best" gift
to the College by December 3 1 , 2005 and then repeat that
gift in each o f the next three years.
The N A A team can be successful when each Graduating
Class works to achieve the overall Mission. Let's all
celebrate at the 50th N A A Convention in 2006 in Little
Rock, with a statement to Dr. Kimbrough o f our support for
the unrestricted funds drive.
Send checks to: Office of Institutional Advancement,
One Trudie Kibbe Reed Drive, Little Rock, A R 72202. C a l l

Now w i t h all o f that said, it is time to get busy! I n

A l s o in future issues, we w i l l highlight an alumnus who

Anniversary o f graduating from Philander Smith College
(Class of 1945). Mr. Mann was given an opportunity to
address the Convention and told the history of the sometimeselusive exploits of black aviators during World War I I .
A n entire page was devoted to the lives o f all living
Tuskegee A i r m e n in the Sunday, August 28, 2005 issue
of the Arkansas Democrat Gazette newspaper. The article
stated "Mr. Mann at age 84, his joints stiff with arthritis, had
to be lifted gingerly into the cockpit of the World War II-era
plane. But as the PT-17 Stearman flew into the hot Florida
Sky, Mann flashed a grin and a thumbs-up sign and went
back to his days training in a plane like this at Tuskegee."
"The pilot asked me i f I wanted to take control and fly
the plane," Mann said afterward " I joked that I didn't want
to kill him or myself. So I just sat back and enjoyed the
flight."
The photo accompanying this article was donated to
Philander Smith College by Mr. Mann and w i l l become a
permanent part of the Library Archives.
