hen I arrived here in December of 2004, I knew
that Philander Smith College had to be more

visible. There were too many people in Arkansas

with limited knowledge about us—except for those well
grounded in the United Negro College Fund ( U N C F ) — a n d we
enjoy very little national presence or name recognition.
So locally, I have tried to attend some of every event
imaginable to connect with people. I really have enjoyed the
speaking engagements because they are great opportunities to
talk about substantive issues and to have my face associated
with Philander Smith College. I always try to write speeches
that, at the very least, entertain me. I f I am having a good
time, the audience generally does as well. A great tactic I use is
to create catchy titles: " A Flat World, 50 Cent, and H B C U s , "
"New and Improved," and "Attack of the Killer B's." M y
neighbors recently came by the house and were talking about
those killer B's. (Admit it: You want to know about them too!)
T h e other way I figured the college could connect with

"We have presented the broadest
spectrum of ideas and backgrounds
of any institution of higher education
in the country."

people was to make sure national figures grace our campus
on a regular basis. This is what "Bless the Mic: A Hip-Hop
President's Lecture Series" does fantastically well. This inaugural
season averaged over 300 persons per lecture. I am confident
that no other college or university in the state can boast a series
of seven or more lectures with this kind of attendance.
Additionally, we have been open to hosting other speakers
and events that have been presented to us, to expose our
campus to additional movers and shakers. I n all, we have
presented the broadest spectrum of ideas and backgrounds of
any institution of higher education in the country — A N Y !
Just in case you have doubts, consider these persons who
came to P S C this year:
Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, the 'hip-hop intellectual'
who has written 13 books in the past 13 years and
who graced the cover of the April 2 1 , 2006 issue
of Chronicle of Higher Education, the most widely
read publication in higher education;
Willie Jolly, named "One of the Outstanding Five
Speakers in the World" by Toastmasters in 1999;
Attorney K i m Crenshaw, Columbia and U C L A law
professor who was a panelist on the 2006 State of
the Black Union teleconference hosted by Tavis

U. S. Senator John McCain (center) and Arkansas gubernatorial hopeful
Asa Hutchinson (far leftt) visit with the audience in the Kendall Center
following a Town Hall Meeting on April 10,2006.

Message From T h e National Alumni Association President

To: Philander Smith College Alumni and Friends
Re: T h e Renaissance of the National Alumni Association ( N A A )

N

ow history, the 2006 50 Annual A l u m n i Convention was a rousing
success! We are thoroughly refreshed, energized, inspired and motivated as a result of the many activities and speeches at the convention. We also renewed old acquaintances, reactivated old alumni chapters,
and even issued a charter for a new chapter in Minnesota. As a result, we have
been prompted to begin a renaissance of the N A A .

During the convention our Vice President, Mrs. E r m a Williams, proposed
a Class Agent Program similar to that used by the Alumni Association i n
2005 to raise over $100,000.00. T h e Class Agent Program is further expanded, however, to reach the younger alumni and to meet our 2006 goal of
$400,000.00 in donations to the college's Unrestricted Fund.
To meet our goals, we have established a strategy which includes three phases.
The hrst is our Leadership Phase. A l l leaders, from the Board of Trustees
to the Alumni Association Committee Chairpersons, are asked to demonstrate their commitment to the college just as Dr. Kimbrough does with his
$500.00 monthly gift. T h e 1877 Society is still alive, but those of you who
cannot meet that level are urged to give your best gift. We anticipate that this
phase will be completed by the 2006 Commencement on May 13.
Phase Two will involve each committed ambassador recruiting our present
300 financial members of the N A A to join with their best gift. This will
include Life Members, Chapter Members, and all A t Large Members of the
2006 active membership. This phase may continue throughout the year and
pick up again in 2007.
Phase Three will be our Class Agent Program kick-off on July 15, 2006. We
plan to reach out to alumni who are not financial members, especially the
graduates of the 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s. Details of the program will be
provided to us by the Vice President and her committee prior to July 15.

"We have been
prompted to begin
a renaissance of
the N A A . "

We urge you not to wait to be asked multiple times before deciding to contribute to the N A A s 2006 Unrestricted Fund Drive. Give now. Gifts should
be made payable to Philander Smith College, c/o Vice President Institutional
Advancement, Philander Smith College, One Trudie Kibbe Reed Drive, Little
Rock, A R 72202.
Remember, the renaissance of the N A A begins with Y O U .
Thanks for your support.

Golden Moments:
The 2006 National A l u m n i Convention

By Yvonne Alexander,

ith a theme of "Celebrating the Legacy: Bringing
Home the Gold," alumni from across the nation
converged on Little Rock the weekend of March
26-28 in celebration of the 50th Annual National Alumni
Convention.
The three-day conference experienced a glorious start
with the 129th Founders' Day Chapel service in the M .
L . Harris Auditorium on the campus of Philander Smith
College. Alumni, friends, faculty and students alike were
inspired by a soul-stirring message by Rev. Cleo S. Smith,
a 1971 graduate and chaplain for the Greater Little Rock
Alumni chapter, entitled "Choosing a Legacy Worth Leaving"
taken from Joshua 1:1-8. Additionally, Mrs. Molice Wilkins
'49 delivered an eloquent tribute to Founders' Day honoree,
Mrs. Hazel Sutton Bullock, a 1941 graduate and 50-year
alumnus of PSC, who received a commemorative plaque
in tribute to her many years of outstanding service to the
college.
During the N A A President's Luncheon, keynote speaker
Rev. B. Herbert Martin Sr. '67, senior pastor of Progressive
Community Center Peoples' Church in Chicago, 111.,
delivered a memorable address to an audience that included
Past National Alumni Presidents who were honored along
with faculty and staff who have rendered twenty plus years of
service to the college. Luncheon attendees were entertained
by two musical selections from the renowned Collegiate

of Alumni

Affairs

Choir of Philander Smith College under the direction of Mr.
Lawrence Hamilton.
The general session on Saturday included the installation
of N A A officers for the years 2006-2008 (see sidebar). After
the conclusion of the general session, alumni attended the
Annual Memorial Service which was presided by Dr. Sokoto
Lulani (nee Charles E . Nesbitt). I n addition to giving the
message Dr. Lulani, with the assistance of Rev. Cleo Smith,
recognized the 22 alumni who passed in 2005.
Saturday was a full day of activities, as later that evening
convention goers attended the highly anticipated Convention
Banquet that was presided by Connie M . Cogshell,
Convention Co-Chair. A t the banquet, the originators
of the Articles of Incorporation for the National Alumni
Association—Mrs. Levada Mason, Mr. Robert Nelson and
Dr. Willie Mae Shockley—were recognized and presented
with a gift of a beautiful wood-grain clock for their vision
and foresight. Other awards presented to individuals and
chapters include: Host Chapter Recognition Awards; P S C
Legacy Awards; Golden and Silver Awards; Membership and
Fund Raising Awards; Graduating Class Fundraising Award;
and the coveted Distinguished Alumnus Award presented
by Dr. Jill Trice to Mr. Ernest O . Jacobs of University City,
Mo. T h i s prestigious honor is awarded to an outstanding
alumnus who has exhibited remarkable leadership in the
areas of financial giving, personal service and commitment

Karrine Steffans, author of Confessions of a Video

Pound for pound, no school in the country has provided
this kind of exposure to its students. Not one. We do this
because when we say our graduates can compete with
anyone, it means that they have a broader perspective than
just their own backgrounds, but at the same time they leave
knowing who they are. T h i s defines education for me.
A n d yet, we realize that we have a duty to provide these
events for the greater community as well, which is why
we never charge for these lectures. I've read recently where

Ann Coulter

better-funded schools host big name speakers and charge as
much as $50 to attend. Even with our limited resources, we
recognize our obligation to the community. Furthermore,
we have been able to bring many to campus who have never
been here before. Hopefully, by doing so, we have made new
friends.
I was asked recently whether "Bless the M i c " was just for
this year: Absolutely... not! Season Two is already lined up
and will once again bring a diverse range of ideas to campus.
From the brilliant mind of Princeton professor Dr. Cornel
West to former B E T 106 and Park host A J Calloway, from
the champion of school funding equality Jonathan Kozol, to
my favorite female rapper M C Lyte, we're going to continue
exposing our students, and this community, to leading
figures in the country.
So if you didn't make it to the campus this school year,
come out next year. T h i s is where things are happening!

challenges; to assist with recruitment;
to raise the standards of P S C in order
to gain more respectability; to be

to develop a positive attitude and
to be outright braggadocious about
our accomplishments. Another
banquet highlight occurred when
Dr. Carl G . Harris, Choral Director

John Hope Franklin Lecture
Moderated by Bishop May

ishop Felton E . May, Dean of the Kendall Science and
Health Mission Center, had the honor of introducing
and moderating the lecture of noted author and
historian Dr. John Hope Franklin. T h e lecture was part of
the Arkansas Literacy Councils' 2006 Literary Festival held

At age 90, the pioneering American historian John Hope
Franklin recalls his amazing life in Mirror to America: The
Autobiography of John Hope Tranklin. Born in Oklahoma
in 1915, Franklin studied at Fisk University and Harvard,
taught at some of the nation's most prestigious universities,
served on committees for Bill Clinton, published seminal
histories of blacks in America, and received the Presidential

to America, said President Bill Clinton, "calls upon all
Americans to look at our nation's past so that we may destroy
the color line that continues to divide our country, and
progress together into the future."
Franklin spoke for an hour and helded questions from
the audience and media.

n March the students, faculty and staff at Philander Smith
College, along with 500 students from several area high
schools, were treated to two spectacular performances by the
world renowned Hispanic Flamenco Ballet.
T h e Hispanic Flamenco Ballet is directed under the auspices
of Jorge Ceron, a cultural exchange expert who began his career
