The Philanderian

BUILDING UP, MOVING AHEAD
Campus Center Grand Opening

1

MESSAGE FROM THE INTERIM PRESIDENT

My fellow Philanderians,
It is my distinct pleasure to convey greetings to each of you as we
inaugurate a new academic year here at our beloved Philander Smith. A
beginning always carries with it a plethora of opportunities to grow, to
effect change, and to contribute to the overall good of our environment.
It is my hope that each of you will commit to share with us in taking
advantage of these opportunities. As an institution, Philander Smith
College is indeed “Moving Forward” in some key, strategic areas:
Most notably and visibly is the official opening of our new Student
Center, unique and state-of-art in its design and usability. Our
appreciation is extended to all who played a significant role in bringing
this phase to fruition.
In addition, new and renewed articulation agreements have been made with local two-year
institutions that will provide the opportunity for increased enrollment in the future for our campus.
We have also become a partner with the Pulaski County Special School District (PCSSD) and the
University of Arkansas at Little Rock as one of two sites for the Charles W. Donaldson Scholars
Academy. This program is designed to assist underserved student populations in PCSSD to acquire
skills necessary to matriculate into college without having to be placed in remedial coursework. This
fall nine students who were participants are now enrolled as freshmen here at Philander Smith.
Furthermore, through the collective effort of the Office of Institutional Advancement, Academic
Affairs, and Enrollment Management, donations and grants have been received that will be used to
enhance instruction and learning through technology and the recruitment of students specifically
from the Delta area of our state.
These and other successes are reasons to celebrate, but must also serve as catalysts for increased
effort to accomplish even greater things.
When challenges arise in life, we have one of two options: We can allow fear to force us into a state
of paralytic inactivity or we can allow our inner resolve to mobilize us for continuous productivity.
Philander Smith College has chosen the latter of these two as our stance.
While it is true that we face many of the same challenges being experienced by HBCUs across the
nation, we continue our forward movement here at our alma mater. So please join us in spiritual
and material support so that both our mission (“to graduate academically accomplished students,
grounded as advocates for social justice, determined to change the world for the better”) and our
vision (“to make Philander Smith one of the premier liberal arts colleges in the nation”) are a
continuous reality as we embrace our rich and enduring legacy as an institution.

MESSAGE FROM THE NATIONAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT
Dear Philanderians,
With the start of another academic year, Philander Smith College is
fortunate to be positioned for a very bright future, in part, for the following
reasons:
(1) The National Alumni Association (NAA) held a
successful 58th Annual Convention in May 2014.
Among other accomplishments, elections were held which
resulted in the re-election of certain officers and the election
of new Executive Committee members. The new members
include the inaugural members of the Executive Committee
based on a 2013 change in the NAA constitution to help
cultivate the next generation of NAA leadership. Per the
amended constitution, the inaugural members consist of
two alumni who graduated within ten years, as well as the current PreAlumni Council president. Accordingly, I am pleased to acknowledge the following inaugural members:
Francennett Herrera ’12, Jacques Edwards ’11, and junior Brittany James, the Pre-Alumni
Council president.
(2) Our recently constructed Student Center opened in time for the new students and returning students.
You have to see it to truly appreciate what a major milestone the facility represents for our college and
students.
There is still time to contribute to the NAA’s $500,000 Last Mile Capital Campaign which will help
provide for a debt-free facility. The NAA capital campaign is being led by NAA vice president Herman
Davis ’73 and Little Rock’s civic and business leader, Sherman Tate ’70.
(3) As you know, PSC is in the midst of identifying a new president. As a member of the Presidential Search
Committee representing the NAA, I am pleased to say that significant progress has been made and hopefully
an announcement will be soon forthcoming.
Finally, I’d like to note that NAA’s 59th Annual Convention will take place March 12- 15, 2015.
Unlike the last few conventions that were held in May, the Annual 59th Convention in March will afford alumni
and students a unique opportunity to interact and to engage with one another.
The theme for the 2015 Convention is “New Beginnings: From Promise to Possession.”
We look forward to celebrating the Classes of 1965 and 1990. Additionally, convention activities will primarily
take place on the campus and in the new Student Center.
During the convention, I am sure we will all find time to reflect on the “breeze way” of yesterday while we
contemplate and act on “New Beginnings: Building for Tomorrow.”
I thank you in advance for your continued commitment and passion for our beloved alma mater, Philander
Smith College.
Sincerely,

Ronald Newsome, ‘71

In 1986, I had the opportunity to meet
my first Philanderian face to face.
The encounter proved life- changing,
introducing me to the spirit and legacy of
a great institution formed by the sacrifice
of visionary leadership, dedicated
instructors and determined students.
I would later learn, as witnessed by
the many alumni I have met across the
country, that many Philander Smith College students would
go on to be visionary themselves, as well as dedicated in their
respective lives as citizens in their communities. Our college
produces people of great faith and character forged in the
crucible of everyday challenges as well as difficult times.

As in every issue of The Philanderian, we celebrate the efforts
of faculty, staff, students and alumni who proudly represent
our institution. Yet this issue of The Philanderian is special
because we celebrate the extraordinary effort by our alumni to
contribute over a half-million dollars toward the completion
of our new $5.1M student campus center that will house a
much needed 300- seat dining facility, a bistro and a student
union. Once again, alumni have shown sacrifice, leadership and
dedication in supporting our great college. Thank you for your
fortitude.
You are Extraordinary!
-------------------------------------In June 2014, Philander Smith College named Rev. C.J. Duvall, Jr.
as vice president for institutional advancement.   A member of PSC’s
board of trustees since 2010, Duvall stepped down from his board seat
to lead the college’s fundraising, development and alumni affairs.
A native of St. Louis, Mo., Duvall was executive vice president of human
resources at Alltel Corporation, a Fortune 250 company headquartered
in Little Rock, Ark., prior to its acquisition by Verizon in January 2009.
As a board member, he served on a campaign committee that raised
$4.3 million of $5.1 million needed to complete construction of the
college’s new 15,700-square foot campus center.
Duvall earned a bachelor of arts in behavioral science and business from
Missouri Baptist University. In addition, he holds a M.S. in industrial/
organizational psychology from the Purdue School of Science, and
graduated Eden Theological Seminary with a master’s in theological
studies. Additionally, he has served in the United Methodist Church as a
senior pastor in the Central District of the Arkansas Conference.

GIVING
Donaldson Scholars Academy Gives Students at Chance at College Success

P

SC alum and Board of Trustees member
Charles W. Donaldson, ’69, may have
stepped down earlier this year as vice
chancellor at the University of Arkansas at Little
Rock after a highly successful 40-year tenure, but
retirement has not yielded his passion for helping
students succeed with their educations.
Donaldson is the brainchild (and namesake)
behind the Charles W. Donaldson Scholars
Academy, a rigorous three-week residential program
designed to prepare recent high school graduates
for college-level work. His goal simple: to help
African American and other socio-economically
disadvantaged students have a shot at educational
achievement.
This summer, 58 recent Pulaski County Special
School District graduates—many of whom had not
yet even applied for college or were even sure they
wanted to attend at all—left the comforts of home
to live on campus at either Philander Smith College
or UALR as they completed the Scholars Academy.
They joined with 37 students enrolled in the Summer
Bridge Program—both aimed at mitigating the need
for college remediation.
The Summer Bridge Program began as a pilot
in 2013 and formed the basis for the academy as

a collaborative effort
with the PCSSD which
was funded through the
district’s $10 million
desegregation settlement.
Student participants made
great gains over the three
weeks, with a 97 percent
passage rate on math
scores, 90 percent passage
rate on reading scores,
and 100 percent passage
rate on composition.
Additionally, all 58 students now plan to attend
college at either Philander Smith or UALR and will
continue as Donaldson Scholars, now eligible for
$2,500 scholarships renewable for up to four years
and $10,000.
This academic year, the program will expand so
that PCSSD’s ninth graders will begin in an annual
program that will continue until they graduate
high school, with the goal of making them ready
to succeed as they pursue higher education. More
information about the Charles W. Donaldson
Scholars Academy is available at www.cwdsa.com.

Pollefeyt, known in country music circles
as “The First Lady of Country Soul,” feels
strongly about giving back to her alma mater
to help further the scholarship of talented
music students. Shown accepting her gift is
Interim President Dr. Lloyd Hervey,
along with PSC music student Destiny
Wright, Music Department Chair Timothy
Tucker and George Blevins. Pollefeyt and
her husband Bill recently donated some of her career artifacts to Mosaic Templars Cultural Center which
are prominently on display at the museum of African American history and culture in Little Rock.

HONORARY DEGREES AWARDED
TO DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI

W

hen it came time for the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters to be presented by the Philander Smith
College Board of Trustees during 2014 commencement exercises, a couple of outstanding alumni
were recipients: Bennie R. Williams, ’62, and Erma P. Williams, ’63.
That the Germantown, Tenn., couple would be honored for their individual and collective contributions to
the college comes as no surprise, as their commitment and largesse to PSC has been well documented through
the years.
The former Erma Power, a retired educator, is a native of Plumerville, Ark., who graduated PSC with an
elementary education degree. Bennie Williams came to Little Rock to attend Philander Smith from his West
Memphis hometown and, besides meeting his future wife, gained an education which would eventually lead to
a successful corporate career with FedEx.
As familiar faces on campus, the Williamses sincerely believe in their responsibility to give of their time,
talent and resources to help sustain the storied tradition and academic excellence of their alma mater.
As such, the PSC Board of Trustees – of which Erma Williams is a former member as a past president of
the National Alumni Association—felt it fitting to honor Bennie and Erma Williams with individual honorary
degrees to salute their impressive and inspiring records of service and generosity to the college.

Bennie Williams listens as his wife Erma proudly accepts her honorary doctorate during PSC’s 2014 commencement ceremony.

PITTS FAMILY HELPS CENTRAL ARKANSAS STORM VICTIMS

E

lijah Pitts’ hometown of Mayflower was rocked by devastating tornadoes
on April 27, 2014, just days before the Memorial Golf Tournament. So
when his family learned of the destruction and ruin in both Mayflower and
Vilonia, they decided to act. Along with their mother Ruth, son Ron and daughter
Kimberly made a decision to contribute $2,500 to the storm relief efforts of the
Central Arkansas Area Command of the Salvation Army. Their thoughtfulness
was matched by Philander Smith College for a total gift of $5,000.
Interim President Dr. Lloyd Hervey joined the Pitts family for the check
presentation at the studios of NBC affiliate KARK-TV which hosted a telethon to
aid those affected by the storm.

Powerful Women Anchor Bless the Mic

S

eason 9 (2013-2014) of the Bless the Mic lecture series rolled into the spring
semester, kicking off Jan. 9 with a packed house for guest speaker Judy
Smith, the woman whose career provided inspiration for ABC’s hit drama,
Scandal.
A rapt audience gave Smith their undivided attention, listening to stories from
her experiences as founder and president of a strategic and crisis communications
firms in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., as well as from the set of the TV political thriller starring actress Kerry Washington as Olivia Pope, the main character
whose career is loosely based on Smith’s.
“The show is inspired by my crisis work, not my life,” Smith made a point to
say, assuring that the more salacious parts of Scandal are a result of show creator
Shonda Rhimes’ imagination.
Smith wandered throughout the crowd candidly talking to and fielding questions directly from audience members. The author of Good Self, Bad Self also
offered her top two crisis management tips: Tell the truth and know what your
objective is and where you want to end up.
Noted poet, writer and spoken word artist Mayda del Valle followed Smith’s
appearance next in the series on Feb. 13. A native of Chicago, del Valle began performing her own writing while in high school.
The Williams College graduate was selected by Oprah’s O Magazine as one of
20 women on the first “O Power List.” In 2001, at the age of 22, del Valle became
the youngest poet and first Latino to win the Individual National Poetry Slam.
In March, popular evangelist Paula White visited campus, to not only ‘Bless
the Mic,’ but to also encourage and inspire.
The Florida-based minister and pastor proselytized that, “It doesn’t matter
where you start, it’s where you finish,” sharing a moving testimony of her childhood traumas, including her father’s suicide when she was very young which
pushed her family into poverty and uncertainty.
White encouraged students and the hundreds of guests who came to hear her
that they should appreciate their individual journeys, while understanding that
“passion is the fuel for your purpose.”

T

he Bless the Mic lecture series celebrates its anniversary 10th season with
the 2014-2015 academic year. Coordinated by the Division of Student
Affairs, the series continues to book speakers which engage, inspire,
motivate, entertain and challenge not only the Philander Smith College campus
community, but the central Arkansas community at-large.

AROUND CAMPUS
One Phenomenal Angel: Lawrence Hamilton
(1954-2014)

Head Women’s Basketball Coach Receives
Conference Honors

	 Lawrence Hamilton was
not only a regular among the
creative circles of New York,
but he was also a familiar face
in his native Arkansas, as well
as a big presence at Philander
Smith College campus during
his time as cultural affairs
director and assistant professor
of humanities. Hamilton passed
away April 3 at the age of 59
in a New York City hospital following complications
from surgery.
A mentor and friend to many, Hamilton endeared
himself to students, faculty and staff alike with
his warm and gracious persona, along with his
tremendous talent that opened doors for him from
Broadway to the Vatican where he once performed
for the pope.
On April 10, the Division of Humanities and Fine
Arts held a special tribute chapel service, Philander’s
Phenomenal Angel: In Memoriam of Lawrence
Hamilton, to honor his many contributions to the
college. “Mr. Hamilton gave so much of himself
serving as choir director, teacher, mentor, and friend
to so many of our alumni and to those of us who had
the privilege of working with him,” said Timothy
Tucker, Music Department Chairman.
Hamilton was laid to rest following celebration
of life services in Little Rock and his hometown of
Foreman, Ark. While he will be sorely missed, he will
always be remembered.

	 Congratulations are
due to PSC Head Women’s
Basketball Coach Brandon
Greenwood,’04, who in March
was recognized as the 2014 GCAC
Women’s Basketball Coach of the
Year!
	 A former PSC Panther
and head coach since 2009,
Greenwood has worked hard
to elevate the Lady Panther ball club in the GCAC
standings. He led the Lady Panthers to a 17-13 overall
record and an 8-4 conference mark, coming in third
place in the Western Division. PSC joined the Gulf
Coast Atlantic Conference in the 2011-12 season.

educational opportunities to
outstanding young African
American women. All year McFadden has traveled
extensively to promote her “Treasure YOU” platform.

	 Congrats to PSC
student Torria Holland
who won the title of 2014

ALUMNI NEWS
L. Clifford Davis, ’45, of Fort
Worth, Texas, received the highest
recognition given a lawyer by the
Tarrant County Bar Association at
its annual Law Day Dinner in May
2014. The Blackstone Award has
been awarded annually since 1963
to a senior member of the bar,
based on a career demonstrating
ability, integrity and courage.
Delia Anderson, ‘88, of
Sherwood, Ark., was recently
named director of the Division
of County Operations at the
Arkansas Department of Human
Service. Previously, as assistant
director, Anderson was responsible
for administering the division’s
Office of Community Services.
Before joining DHS, Anderson
held several positions at Philander Smith College,
including alumni affairs director and vice president
for institutional advancement.
Joseph Jones, Ph.D., ‘00,
founding director of the Social
Justice Initiative at Philander
Smith College, has enjoyed a
yearlong fellowship sponsored by
the American Council on Higher
Education (ACE). Through the
competitive program that helps
train and prepare college personnel
for senior-level positions in higher
education, Jones has gained extensive knowledge
and information about budgeting and fundraising,
marketing, diversity, curriculum vitae design, and
other vital issues faced by college and university
administrators. Additionally, as part of the program,
Jones was assigned to spend a semester away from
his SJI duties shadowing the chancellor at the
University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
The Fellows Program is perhaps the nation’s most
successful and well-known development program for
higher education professionals looking to advance
their careers. So now, with this valuable training,
Jones is more qualified than ever to reach his goal of
becoming a HBCU president.
