Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church
Title
Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church
Description
Wesley Chapel's origins date back to 1853 (http://wesleychapelumclr.org/about-us/history). The church was originally established on land near 8th and Broadway. Wesley Chapel was the home of Walden Seminary, the precursor to Philander Smith College where Miss Helen Perkins served as the principle instructor from 1877-1881 under the supervision of the Freedmen's Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church (Gibson, 1972). In 1883, the church purchased the land at its present location at 1109 South State Street. Wesley Chapel was rebuilt twice before the current structure was completed in 1927 (http://wesleychapelumclr.org/about-us/history). The College still holds weekly Chapel meetings at the church throughout the academic year.
