Description

Adeline Smith Home, formerly located at 1101 Izard Street. The construction of the original building was funded by Mrs. Adeline Smith (widow of Philander Smith) and dedicated in 1884 under the auspices of the Woman's Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church (PSC Catalog, 1935-1936). The Home, which was built to accommodate 10 girls, quickly became overcrowded with students, so Mrs. Smith dedicated more funds to build a larger structure to house up to 24 pupils (Gibson, 1972). Construction began on the three story addition in 1887 and it was dedicated on March 5, 1988 (Gibson, 1972). The purpose of the Adeline M. Smith Home was to train young girls in various forms of domestic work including "cooking, cleaning, chamber work, dining room work, washing" as well as social and religious education (PSC Catalog, 1899-1900). The building was razed in 1963.
