"Bless the Mic" is a unique college lecture series hosted by Philander Smith College that showcases renowned scholars, entertainers, politicians, authors, motivational speakers and activists who deliver messages that resonate with the hip-hop /millennial generations. The lecture series was created by the College’s 12th President, Dr. Walter Kimbrough (The Hip-Hop President) as a way to initiate dialogue on campus about contemporary issues relevant to the student body. The “Bless the Mic” series began in September 2005 with guest speaker Dr. Michael Eric Dyson and has run for over 10 years. Other notable speakers include Dr. Cornell West, Ambassador Andrew Young, Dr. Melissa Harris-Perry, Rev. Al Sharpton, Iyanla Vanzant, Tavis Smiley, Donna Brazille and MC Lyte.
