Oral History Collection

2005-2017

The Oral History Collection consists of audio visual recordings, biographies and documentation from the Black College Project that Philander Smith College students participated in from 2006-2009. The project coordinator Jajuan Johnson from the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies and former PSC Archivist Gracie Carter trained Philander Smith College students to conduct oral history interviews to document the experiences of African Americans with "special information about the past." The collection includes interviews with World War II Veteran and Tuskegee Airman Milton P. Crenchaw who was also a flight instructor at PSC the 1940's, as well as notable PSC Alumna Lottie Shackelford and author Janis Kearney.

In the Spring semester of 2017, the PSC oral history project was revived. An additional series entitled "Philander Smith College Then and Now: Faculty and Staff Reflections" was produced by D. W. Reynolds Library staff in honor of PSC's 140th Anniversary. The purpose of this series was to record the personal narratives of some of Philander Smith College's longest serving faculty and staff members.
