Philander Smith, namesake of Philander Smith College. Mr. Smith was a Christian businessman from Oak Park, IL (by way of Worth, NY) who gave monies to support the work missions of the Methodist Episcopal Church (Gibson, 1972). After his death, his widow, Mrs. Adeline Smith continued his work and donated major funds to build the first permanent structures for Walden Seminary. In 1883, the school was renamed Philander Smith College.
