Description

Elijah Pitts Gazebo, on Daisy L. Gatson Bates Drive. The gazebo was completed in 2000 and named in honor of PSC Class of '61 Alumnus, Elijah Eugene Pitts. Pitts was on the Philander Smith Panther Football team and was drafted in 1961 to play as a running back for the NFL's Green Bay Packers. In 1967, Elijah Pitts "scored two rushing touchdowns in Super Bowl I" for the Packers (PSC, 2000). Pitts later went on to spend 16 seasons as the assistant coach of the Buffalo Bills (PSC, 2000). Each spring, Philander Smith College hosts the Elijah Pitts Memorial Golf Tournament in remembrance of the Green Bay Packers and Arkansas Hall of Famer. Pitts passed away in 1998.
