Description
Images of the exterior of the Old Gymnasium and Physical Education Building in the early 1960's. The gym was originally built in 1948 and included classrooms for Drama and Speech, office space for Physical Education and Health instructors and also a "conservatory of art" (PSC Catalog, 1952-53). Philander Smith College received funds from private donors and was awarded a grant from U. S. Department of the Interior National Park Service to restore the building (Hicks, 2005). The Old Gym was renovated and dedicated as the Sherman E. Tate Student Recreation Center in on September 22, 2005 (Hicks, 2005).
